ARTIST NOTE
In October of the year 2008, Ddanji (Female, 2 mos) from a pet shop and having paid 300,000 won, became a part of our family. (Anxiety) She grew up learning to live together (Search) and to be a happy family member. (Hope) At age two she became a mother of three sons. (Love)
A sudden growth of family and a start of life no longer being alone had growing pains (Conflict) and burdensome at times. (Despair)
Laughing and crying (Understanding) the pursuit of happiness continued on. (Overcome)
This is a story of Ddanji, the dog, how she grew as a member of the family and the emotions she had felt through all. And her story was used as a motif for the 4th solo exhibition in 2015, “Way of Love”.
Ever since the interest in stray or abandoned dogs had increased greatly and with the help of a well-known activist in rescue and medical care, Seo Myong-Won, I was introduced to a rescued dog, Gijugi. (Miracle) Despite being near death from a tragic injury to the spine, being abandoned by loved ones having apparent obvious feelings of fear and despair Gijugi showed resilience as to hold on to life with belief and courage that this world is worth living in.
As I sponsored for Gijugi I was inspired to create a piece that harnesses what I have felt.
Artist’s note after meeting Bori, the dog
Shortly after my solo exhibition in 2015, a wonderful gift had come to me.
In the outskirts of GweSan, a friend sent news of a rescued dog. This was Bori. Without a second thought Bori became our family. I felt as though this event was destined considering my experience with Gijugi. The motif had transitioned from before the times of Bori, Affinity of Family (2014), Dogs Story (2015) and Chun-Gyeon-Hap-Il (2015) followed by Zoopia (2016) and SoSo Story (2017~2018).
Bori was a stray dog that taught me that how you were born is not of importance.
Intelligent and wise Bori leads his life with confidence. A life has just as much meaning as your amount of determination. Although rough-skinned and skinny, Bori showed determination for life through love and belief. And Bori was such a lovely sight to behold.
I feel a surge of happiness as look at a dog swinging a golf club, shouting “Good shot!”.
A dog’s single day is equivalent to seven of human’s. With this in mind, the current piece’s concept is “Good Day”.
Conflict and contradiction, anxiety and despair, joy and sorrow, patience and wait; portrayed in their lives as it is for us as the modern day people.
We recognize companionship as we walk side-by-side comforting each other.
And we all hope for everyone’s “Good Day”.
