ARTIST NOTE
A Fish Floating from the Depths toward the Surface
On a finished canvas you will see a fish floating up to the surface as if roaring to the world with its mouth wide open and its teeth so rough. Its spreads its fin and tail with thorns as sharp and deadly as nails. It is unsure why the fish portrayed in my work has such rough appearance. Some may say, “Considering how a painting is a portrayal of self maybe the artist’s psychological or mental state is expressed as a venomous fish?”. I can neither agree or deny. Although I cannot say for certain, perhaps, the fish manifests my desire within the unconscious wanting to surface. And the fish seemingly still on canvas is desperately emerging toward the surface. Its movement rather than being limited to the screen of the canvas, tries jump out of it as it stares sharply toward the outside world.
The work process I feel is getting simpler. The recent work, Autism, had the fish trapped in an hourglass. Rather than to include unnecessary figures such as an hourglass the fish in front of a dark background takes up the entire canvas. If the previous work was more an unconscious defensive instinct the current work is for seeking freedom from the dominating conscious. However, still wandering around the border in between the depth of the subconscious and surface of the conscious.
